Pathos Inpol Ear Headphone Amplifier
Apr 7, 2021 at 9:40 PM Post #16 of 694
Inpol Ear arrived today!
Double boxed.
Amp is carefully packaged in stryrocene.
Remote is machined of solid metal block.
Identical finish as my unit which is metallic black.

The amp is burning in now.
I've found high end solid state takes about 200 hours of play time before finally settling in. Output tubes the same 200 hours. My new WyWires Modwright Umbilical upgrade is also burning in. I won't be posting anything critical about the sound before 200 hours burn in time. Maybe a casual observation or 3 before then.

At either 100 or 200 hours I will roll in 75 Reflektor silver shields. I want to have a good sense of this amps native house sound before I pop in the Reflektors. Amp will (probably) be burning in 24 hours a day until 200 hours are on Reflektors.

Initial impressions after about a week plus with the InPol;

DAC - Holo Audio May
Headphone - HE6SE and Final D8000

Treble: Great extension with a borderline sibilant on some tracks
Mids: Enveloping around the head to create an intimate vocalisation
Bass: Ample, fast and fairly authoritative
Imaging: Impressive imaging which allows to virtually place instruments/singers within the 3D space

Most impressive thus far, even with the limited time I've had on it, is the ability to extract info on a macro scale. Usually certain songs will require you to somewhat critically listen to be able to ascertain details or nuances but the Pathos presents them so effortlessly.

Just got a pair of Siemens to roll in future. Don't mind the fingers, I was peeling blueberries for the infant hahaha

Your 60's Siemens (grey shields?) are among the best 6922's ever made. Enjoy!

Just some quick listening notes on the Pathos running the stock tubes. 45 hours total burn in time.

Before I go into those brief notes I want to outline what I value in my music listening.
Harmonic richness over ' gooey tubey warmth'. I enjoy a rich organic sound that does not sacrifice Detail, speed, soundstage and layering front to back. This is what I strive for in both 2 channel and with my headphone setup.

***NOTE*** I am using my Modwright Oppo 205 as the DAC pre-amp in the chain. The Pathos is only used as an amp in my listening so far.

First off my listening has been quite enjoyable thru the first 2 days. The sound (though limited by the stock tubes) is musical and detailed. The other night while listening to music I put on Whitesnake's 'Slip of the tongue' and did a doubletake. I've never heard it sound that good. So I went to 'Still of the night', back to ' Slip of the tongue' and then ended with 'Here I go again'. Lovely presentation, nice detail with no hints of sibilance whatsoever. IMO the stock tubes play really well with rock as does the Inpol Ear.

I've had a change of plans though...
Instead of waiting until 100 hours to drop in the Reflektors, my impatience got the best of me and I just put them in.

Immediately even at zero hours the Reflektors are tonally much richer than the stock tubes. Listening to Celine Dion there is an amazing rich organic quality that is just missing with the stock 6922 EV's. Whitesnake sounds even better, and these Tubes are still about 200 hours burn in time from being near their best.

Be back soon at 50-100 hours burn in time with the Reflektors.

😄😄😄

I had a similar thing happen as I was rolling tubes on my Modwright Oppo. I had a pair of 69 Telefunken 6DJ8's which were a nice upgrade over the stock EV's. To my ears though, Zero hour Reflectors bettered the 150 hour Telefunken in so many areas.

For me the Telefunkens were good, it's just the Reflektors speed and musicality are more to my tastes. To my ears the Reflektors made the Telefunkens sound 'thick and slow. The Telefunken were really to the warmer side of neutral.

Let us all know your thoughts on the Reflektors.

🤙

To those watching this thread, one of the great points about the Inpol Ear are the 6922's it uses as driver tubes. That's an extremely well known family of tubes, with so many different 'flavors' available, that you'll be able to tune the Pathos to your liking. This was one of the most important buying factors for me. I almost bought the Cayin HA-300 but I already had 6922's to roll and was quite familiar with the tube family of the Pathos.

The GOAT tube rolling thread is Rob's 6922 shootout right here on these forums. That thread is so legendary. Thanks Rob! (imo @Dusbtepgirl 's 5u4g rectifier review is runner up)

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/692...922-6n23p-e88cc-cca-7308-e188cc-tubes.761078/

With just a little bit of time invested, anyone can educate themselves on just about the complete 6922/7308 family and be knowledgable enough to competently tube roll to their tonal preferences.

They are not used as output tubes. These are the driver tubes to the (quite unique) MosFET output stage.
