Unveiled: Meet the HD 620S

Nice to see Sennheiser coming out with new models but honestly, it looks like it should be in the 500 line, not the 600 line.
We know that it's a bit confusing at first, but for us the sound quality is the determining factor. We're sure it will become familiar fast
For closed headphones, the chassis of the 500 series is a much better fit. It is more lightweight, compact, and has a one-sided cable. The 600 series chassis can be completely assembled by hand, but this is not beneficial if you need to tightly control leakage during assembly. Acoustically, the angled transducers help with the perception of space and reduce the feeling of "closed" sound. The 600 series already sounds intimate, which works fine for open headphones, but it doesn't cut it anymore once you close it up.
We started the project with the ambition to finally build widely acclaimed high-performance closed-back headphones. Of course, we had our market analysis and initial thoughts on where the price would ideally be, but the technical development was completely detached from commercial considerations, and we just shot for the best sound we could achieve. At some point, we were clear that we had surpassed the 500 series for good, and in turn we also upgraded the mechanics with steel sliders and ear cup covers.

I understand that it's easier to get excited over completely new designs. After almost 10 years with the firm, I have gained a lot of respect for the engineers who came before me. The work they have done on the 500, 600, and 800 series is exceptionally refined and in my mind ideal for their specific purposes. I've personally soldered a lot of different transducers into the 500 chassis, and I still believe it holds a lot of potential for extraordinary sound reproduction.

With those specs, I’m curious about how they scale down in terms of power for portability, and how they scale up in terms of amplification quality. Beyond that, I’m just eager to read or hear other folks’ listening impressions….
I've tried them with every amp in my signature except my tube rig, and the experience has been quite consistent. The balanced option is quite good and there's a noticeable "hook" for my preferences. I'm looking forward to some tube impressions from y'all. Naturally I started plugging them into a bunch of self-contained circuits like synthesizers and drum machines. They hold up pretty well tonally, but there's no question that a purpose built amp or DAC amp runs laps around built-ins. My top end amp is the HDV 820 (naturally) so it will be interesting to hear it on some even higher-end gear especially separates.
@ericpalonen
Are you going to have a unit at Munich high end?
Several :)

Looking forward to seeing the reviews for this headphone. When I had the 560s, I always wanted a closed back version! Should be great for late night jam sessions with the closed-back version for sure!

The leather pads and the removal of the screen showing the drivers is a great touch Sennheiser!

I got the AR5000's coming tomorrow but I might get these for my birthday in June, I gifted my 560s to my brother-in-law a while a go and he still uses them to this day!

What I consider is how many meetings for the single ended entry? Why are so many large companies making such bad decisions these days? I will bet that the minority wanted the single entry on this headphone and the majority caved once again to the minority who never really know what people want. They only know what they want to push. :) is this not the 1st 6 series with this connection? For all that already have sen cables for all their other 6 series headphones this is not compatible so why even consider it? :)

Several :)
I've only tried them with two amps, the Apple Dongle and the Feliks Audio Envy 25th Anniversary Edition. I must say I quite enjoyed them off the Envy :beerchug:

We had zero meetings on the cable entry
Since closed headphones are more likely to be used in a mobile setting, I believe one-sided entry is much more convenient. On the signal side, the receptor has balanced wiring, so you can attach balanced cables as well. In theory the HD 630VB also had a different cable entry, but that was probably the worst solution of all, and I believe the HD 620S will make a lot more people happy as well.

🙏 Thank you! This one sounds different enough that I think you can justify it. Better to ask for forgiveness than permission 😉

I got the HD 6xx collection myself, the HD 600, HD 650, HD 660S, and HD 660S2, so definitely an HD 6xx fan as well. Interestingly over the months I gravitated towards the HD 650 being my favorite which was my least favorite of the 4 at first. But which is my favorite can definitely change as I change my system and honestly mood plays a big factor. The HD 620S is definitely going to be an interesting listen.

I’m going to have to wait a few months before buying anymore headphones as I already bought a couple new headphones recently; but hopefully by the end of the year I’ll get to trying out the HD 620S.

I'll dig out my calipers and a fresh 560S see if I can get that # for you.
Did you end up getting those measurements? If its not significant enough of a change from something like my hd599 then im gonna be a real sad boi. Hd620s otherwise looks incredible

If you ever get to a CanJam, we'll definitely have them on hand for ya!

Turns out my calipers are in storage but I'll do it the ol' fashioned way a smidge later today.

Edit:

@BarefootDyl and @XERO1 I just performed a quick depth gauge measurement (from the left edge of the white paper strip to the marking) and the HD 620S has an additional 5+ millimeters of clearance versus my HD 598, which is in line with the HD 560S.
