Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Good evening all! New guy here from Germany checking in.
I was able to grab a nice 300r from eBay with good earphone sockets but bad battery. The latter is not a problem as I intend to use it in the office most of the time. Up until now I was using my iPhone as a DAP but it was time for an upgrade. I’ll know in about a week or two if I’ve made the right decision.
To play it on my stereo I guess I connect the headphone outlet to tape/cd-rom or Aux and switch to line output mode. This would result in an analogue set up but I would like to go fully digital using the usb socket on my receiver (Pioneer VSX-920). The manual says I’ll need an OTG cable for this here (I nearly wrote OTC), but is there anything else I need to look out for?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice here.
Chris
ps: I also posted an enquiry over at the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 forum. I am not happy with them!
Consider unlocking and rooting the 300R.

After I learned about 300r twrp recovery was available, like you, I brought a 300R from a member in this forum. I immediately unlocked and rooted the DAC, modified the Prop file, installed free Hiby Music Player to bypass the Android audio (may purchase PowerAmp or UAAP in the future). The 300r sounded great.

Also brought new caps and larger battery for a mod in the future .

The 300R is stuck with buggy Android 5.1.1, especially in file/storage access. Beware.

Hi Buzzbuzz,
I‘m really not that much into this to go through the procedure described in that link, thanks anyway. My OTG cable arrived and just as expected my VSX-920 doesn’t recognise the xdp -300, just a simple No Device in the display. Is there any way I can get this to work by twiddling the settings? BTW the xdp is charged when hooked up to the VSX with my OTG cable. Could I have the wrong cable?

Definitely wrong cable, OTG cable won’t charge your machine

Hi Hercules,
this is the cable I bought. Maybe someone can send me an Amazon link for the right one? That would be appreciated.

It‘s just a normal charging cable, and the USB A port won’t work with OTG to send audio data from XDP-300R to your receiver, it’s only work with iDevice or USB thumb drive.

If your music all within the Micro SD card, get a Micro SD card reader, and insert the Micro SD from your 300R, let the VSX920 read and play it.

If you want to control music playback plus making streaming music playback with App as well, just using the USB cable you bought to keep the 300R charging, and one extra 3.5mm to RCA cable, 3.5mm from your 300R and RCA goes into front RCA Audio port, and activate the Line Out mode from pull down menu (drag finger down from top edge to center of screen), indeed the DAC inside the 300R is way better than the one inside VSX920, just let the VSX920 do the amplification job is fine.

Thanks Hercules for that detailed description. I tried it out and it works very well, so at least I can now use my 300r on my stereo, although the receiver identifies an analogue connection here. I did some further shopping around and found an OTG cable, but the receiver still says ‘no device or wrong device’ when I try to connect it. Maybe it’s just not possible to connect the two via USB? Has anybody else here tried this?

The Front USB only recognize Mass USB storage device or Apple Device, no OTG. Again your 300R having better DAC than your VSX-920, no advantage on sound quality if go digital. using OTG also mean you can’t charge your 300R while playing.

Install UAPP and problem solved
The 300R will not let me download the UAPP for some reason (error message), but I'll try again later.

Thanks again Hercules,
I‘m hoping to upgrade soon to a Denon AVR-X 4700 soon, so maybe that will work?
On another note: the browser in my 300R won’t let me access my iCloud Drive for some reason 😵‍💫. Is there anyway I can get this to work? That would for me be a lot more practical than using the sd-cards all the time.

4700 wont work in OTG way, sorry

Probably browser and Android version too old that not secure enough for iCloud

is this player worth € 180 with two sandisk 2x 200gb cards and when it comes to the quality of the sound, it will be better for ibasso dx160? Will I be able to drive the hd600 headphones without an additional amplifier?

Won’t drive HD600 directly, and can’t bypass Android SRC even with native player, but as a Digital Transport to external DAC/Amp is fine with UAPP
