I don't know about the timbre, but checking/cleaning the lenses was mentioned as best practice nearly nine years ago, in the Mojo OG thread.

Just good housekeeping … same as the occasional cleaning of all connections every year or two,
Something like Deoxit can’t hurt for metal to metal connections ..
Maybe using wooden Toslink plugs could improve “timbre” ….
