THE WATERCOOLER HEADPHONE EDITION – Headphones, Amps, DACs, and desktop/home audio related – a freewheeling discussion of gear, impressions, music, and musings.
🙌 🥳 🎧 (Sitting and listening to Gogo Penguin’s “A Humdrum Star” on the ZMF Atrium Closed with my Sony WM1A while enjoying the updates “at the watercooler”) Huge thanks to those who have pointed out Gogo Penguin’s incredible modern jazz in this forum. Their wonderful playing makes me smile. ❤️...- AudioDuck

Clearly name tags of some sort will be needed. 😁 Worst case I’ll buy a stack of “Hello, my name is…” white labels and carry them with a Sharpie.- AudioDuck

Excellent point. The vast majority or my listening is with my Bluesound Node 2 feeding my Gungnir MB DAC, so my control of playback is via WiFi, as the CDP is purely for backup and hardly ever sees use. 😉 The preamp needs line-of-sight IR remote control, hence I’ll keep it out in the open.- AudioDuck

Funnily enough my next audio-related purchase will be a new and larger/better cabinet for my setup. Thankfully I’ve found a very well-regarded builder in the area who has fair prices and lovely items. I’m thinking something like the below, with the headamps and preamp in the middle/open...- AudioDuck

Speaking of SoCal, I continue to be excited for CJ SoCal (my first!), so I’ll pop in regularly to check in on who’s able to make it. 😁 Is there usually a poll in advance or some “roundup posts” or anything to gather folks?- AudioDuck

Thank you! Looking into Bob James’ recordings now. Ran into this recording, which sounds interesting (binaural!)… anyone familiar with it?- AudioDuck

Summit-Fi Random Thoughts
FWIW, I have active ATC SCM-19A towers on IsoAcoustics Gaia footers (~$4,000 used) plus a Totem Storm sub on an IsoAcoustics Aperta sub stand (~$800 used) running off a Wyred 4 Sound STP-SE preamp ($1,000 used) with cables to taste/match. About $6,000 plus cables (using my existing...- AudioDuck

I hope so, as it’s 100 percent deserved, and the best marketing is genuine fandom and word of mouth (I’m a product marketer, and value community advocacy greatly).- AudioDuck

In addition to the sonic virtues of my Olivewood ACs, I was listening to them with my DAP this morning and reflecting on how (relatively) light and VERY comfortable they are with the BBB strap and Caldera Thin Suede pads. Just lovely comfort and of course a phenomenal listening experience.- AudioDuck

Yeah, even owning two pairs that have thousands of hours left in them I’m tempted. The liquid sound, bass, and airiness in the right amp makes 6080s (and 7236s) sound brutish in comparison. 😝- AudioDuck

Norne Audio (Was: Norse Audio): Feedback & Impression Thread
Trevor made a Silvergarde SX-4 for my Shures, and it’s my tried-and-true mobile companion. Highly recommended. (I’m also fortunate enough to have a 4.4 mm balanced Silvergarde SX-8 that I use with my full-size headphones and my DAP… also highly recommended, but a bit spendy and harder to come by!)- AudioDuck

A couple of thoughts on the G73-R (albeit in an OTL amp, not the Rivera)- while it is not a rich, “British mid-range”-sounding tube per se… But the G73-R presents a tonal palette close enough to my Mullard and Brimar options while providing more air and “presence” that it is my go-to driver...- AudioDuck

Thanks for clarifying! Maybe one day curiosity will get the best of me (or I’ll just email Schiit support and ask), but in the meantime I’ll just enjoy the lush, rich sound. 🥰 I recently added a Wyred 4 Sound preamp to my active tower speakers (ATCs)- very transparent and actually tube-like...- AudioDuck

Yeah, I’m using a DH Glass Master. Excellent cable- a little stiff, but not challenging to route/use, and very well-built. The DH Labs was a consensus fave anmong reviewers along with a medical-grade (Lifa brand? I’d need to check) glass optical cable. The DH Labs is available at The Cable...- AudioDuck

The more I listen to my Gumby (via a VERY good optical cable) with either headphones or two-channel, the more it impresses me. The two-channel setup is arguably a “budget reference system”, yet the Gumby never seems outmatched.- AudioDuck

I have to say the one-two punch of the Verité Closed and Atrium Closed is a wonderful combo. My plan to buy the Caldera Closed to complete a ZMF “Holy Trinity” is pure hedonism and over the top, but I’m doing it anyway… I’ve been fortunate enough to own the Audeze LCD-XC, Focal Radiance, and...- AudioDuck
