Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Sounds right to me @Thorsten Loesch when making your supercapacitor bank for the Zen Can, besides the capacitors, did you put any other components in the bank? And does the sound change if you use let’s say 100F in total compared to 150F? Besides it supplying less peak current for less time...

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Thoren. Is there any difference to having caps in series or parallel? Besides the obvious measure of capacitance. So I can try and make my own supercapacitor bank. Thanks

That’s awesome man. Good for you! So you just upped the capacitors on the power supply right?

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Nah I have never been in the SINAD cult nor will ever be. But maybe a small test of getting two of the same supercapacitors and wiring them in series to the ipower X and Zen Can would be a quick way to test any difference if there is one. Yeah I don’t have a good enough understanding of...

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

@Thorsten Loesch , you think that the supercapacitor I have because it has other circuitry adds some more ESR and why it isn’t as ‘ snappy’? And I noticed the Ipower Elite is slow sounding. A bit bloated. Is that related to higher ESR? Maybe the supercapacitor bank you made is ‘ better’...

Yeah I will, no rush. Doubt it will break in that way. From experience.

Also, I’m connecting the supercapacitor, is there any advantage to using solid core wire , or silver plated wire! Over regular stranded copper wire? Thanks

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

lol, nah, you just made a good amp is all. I dig it. I don’t dig the elite power with it though. Too much. Gonna return that one. The ipowerX is just fine. And for a little more ooomph the supercapacitor is better. How come it’s so sensitive to power? Are all the os cons on the...

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Ok thanks for all that. Well I got an Ifi elite power just to try the ‘ same’ technology of the ipowerX with more current and it has the same effect of making the bass or fundamentals more visceral. So doing that kinda solidified that what I hear was not because I wasn’t using power supplies...

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

I bought one since it wasn’t that expensive and good quality caps are pretty darn expensive. I have no idea. But I got some thicker cables ( 18awg) to handle more current and to hardwire since USB C which I have it connected with now can only handle a max of 3A. I’m thinking maybe that’s the...

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

I left them on all night and will again today. Just leave them powering on, all the time It’s really odd. Maybe you like the different sound more than me? What’s the difference between your zen can sound with and without your supercaps? Does the main sound change quite a bit and the bass...

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

So I should have the supercapacitors connected to the power ‘ and’ to the zen can for hours to settle? Or can I just plug the caps in without the zen can? Thanks man

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Yeah, will do. All this stuff is fascinating how it makes a diff. Also the ipowerX measures 5.25v And the supercapacitor is 5.10v but rises when plugged in slowly. I’ll leave it charge. Is it ok to leave it on for hours to burn in? The manufacturer says to burn in for 72 hours at least.

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Funny, last night I added the supercapacitor and it made the sound noticeably thicker. And the soundstage closer. Unless that was the effect of the sound being thicker. And also made the sound smoother. I do prefer the sound overall without it. It’s clearer without it. Very interesting.

@Thorsten Loesch You said that putting two IpowerX in parallel doesn’t give 6A correct? Only one works and the other kicks in when the amp needs more current ? Cheers

@sunjam Now you need to put lightnight stickers on the side of your Zen DAc as it’s the hotrodded version. Lol

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Looking at a lot of these parts I’m suprised alot of them have +/-20% tolerances. How do any of these audio products sound the same without slight deviations in sound from each other? Unless the important parts have tighter tolerances. The os cons are +/-20% as well. But I guess those...

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

How come you didn’t solder in a base to be able to swap in different opamps? @Thorsten Loesch are Sparkos discrete opamps good. Or I’m general are there any benefits to discrete opamps or a discreet output analog output stage? And can you basically fit in most 4 pin per side op amps in there?

Super (capacitor) charging your iFi Zen Can (and other zen products and possibly other manufacturers)

Wow, I admire your persistence. I also think it’s fun to mod, more than just buy something more expensive and/or ‘ better’. No fun in that really.

Ha, I thought so! Hopefully I’ll visit my folks in Greece this summer and get some swimming in at a couple islands. Meanwhile enjoying the Zen Can

Does it make sense to be an audio purist?

Are you Greek? I’m asking from the name My post was of course sarcasm If you are Greek I get it cause I am and we offer philosophize
