Yeah one reason I like the Piety over the Schiit amps I had in the past is it doesn't have the dryness the Schiit amps tend to have but a rather more fluid, analog, full, and rich sound. I am definitely considering the Pietus Maximus eventually based on my impressions with the Piety so far...

I think that's just for the pcb board and the plastic driver brace. From what I gather the driver is unique to the HD 620S.

They did rather recently with the DT 700/900 Pro X, they are still round though. But I do find Sennheiser does experiment more with new chassis and earcup designs than Beyer. And the headbands on many of the older-style Beyers are bad/fragile. I feel they finally addressed the headbands...

Yes there are similar timbral characteristics but in all honesty don’t find them similar enough sonically to really see the S2 as a version 2, but rather as a different model within the lineup, like the HD 670 or HD 680 would’ve made more sense as to highlight the S2’s technical superiority...
